SPI Flagship Initiatives are multi-annual programmes combining science and technology projects from different disciplines and different groups/institutions in Switzerland around a polar focus region. The funding is focused on field campaigns (logistics, safety, etc.), data management, outreach, and programme coordination, thus providing temporary infrastructure for a Swiss-led polar research programme.

Further information can be found in the detailed description of the SPI Flagship Initiatives framework and scope provided in the SPI Flagship Initiatives – Call for Proposals. Please feel free to reach out to secretariat@swisspolar.ch if you have any questions.

The 2025 call for SPI Flagship Initiatives pre-proposals is now open

The second call for proposals for SPI Flagship Initiatives starts with the call for pre-proposals to be submitted by 30 April 2025.

168飞艇 Mount Everest Foundation Funds https://mountainresearchinitiative.org/funding-opportunities/mount-everest-foundation-funds/ Mon, 13 Jan 2025 16:31:29 +0000 https://mountainresearchinitiative.org/?post_type=funding-opportunitie&p=32837 Founded in 1955, the Mount Everest Foundation (MEF) funds exploratory scientific and mountaineering expeditions across the globe.

Expeditions funded by the MEF must:

  • Take place in mountain regions.
  • Have exploration (the acquisition of new knowledge) as their main purpose.
  • Normally have the majority of its members from the UK, New Zealand and/or Nepal.

Applications and supporting documentation should be submitted by email to the MEF Secretary. Closing dates for receipt of completed applications are the 31st January for expeditions talking place after mid-April of that current year, and the 30th September for those expeditions taking place after 1st December the same year and before the end of the following year. These dates are strictly observed, and expeditions are never considered in retrospect. A Screening Committee meets to consider these applications twice a year – in November and March.

168飞艇 US NSF: Human-Environment and Geographical Sciences Program (HEGS) https://mountainresearchinitiative.org/funding-opportunities/us-nsf-human-environment-and-geographical-sciences-program-hegs/ Wed, 08 Jan 2025 13:47:23 +0000 https://mountainresearchinitiative.org/?post_type=funding-opportunitie&p=32799 The objective of the Human-Environment and Geographical Sciences Program is to support basic scientific research about the nature, causes, consequences, or evolution of the spatial dimensions of human behaviors, activities, and dynamics as well as their interactions with environmental and social processes across a range of scales. Contemporary geographical research encompasses diverse research traditions and methodologies. Recognizing the breadth of the field’s contributions to science, the HEGS Program welcomes proposals for empirically grounded, theoretically engaged, methodologically rigorous, and generalizable research that advances geographical and geospatial sciences.

Because the National Science Foundation’s mandate is to support fundamental scientific research, the HEGS program cannot fund research that takes as its primary goal humanistic interpretations or findings that are not generalizable or reproducible. HEGS welcomes proposals that utilize quantitative, qualitative, or mixed methods in novel ways. However, a proposal that applies geographical or geospatial methods to a geographic problem without proposing how that problem provides an opportunity to make a theory-testing or theory-expanding contribution to geographical science, broadly defined, will be returned without review. HEGS supported projects are expected to yield results that will enhance, expand, and transform fundamental geographical theory and geospatial methods and that will have broader impacts that benefit society.

Generally, successful HEGS proposals should describe clear and detailed plans for data collection (including sample selection if appropriate), justification for proposed methods, plans for data analysis, attention to confounding variables, and efforts to address biases (e.g., confirmatory biases, selection biases, etc.). Competitive HEGS proposals should substantiate the validity of findings and generalizability to broader contexts.

It should be noted that HEGS is situated in the Behavioral and Cognitive Sciences Division of the Social, Behavioral and Economic Sciences Directorate at NSF. Therefore, it is critical that research projects submitted to the HEGS program illustrate how the proposed research questions engage human dimensions that are relevant and important to people and societies.

A proposal that fails to be responsive to these program expectations will be returned without review.

168飞艇 European Space Agency – Future Earth Joint Programme Open call for Global Research Networks 2025: Case Studies on Climate Change & Cities in Low & Middle-Income Countries https://mountainresearchinitiative.org/funding-opportunities/european-space-agency-future-earth-joint-programme-open-call-for-global-research-networks-2025-case-studies-on-climate-change-cities-in-low-middle-income-countries/ Wed, 08 Jan 2025 13:40:43 +0000 https://mountainresearchinitiative.org/?post_type=funding-opportunitie&p=32798 Through the ESA-Future Earth Joint Programme, researchers in Future Earth’s Global Research Networks are
invited to propose case studies using Earth Observation (EO) data to address the research themes of the
IPCC’s Special Report on Climate Change and Cities, with a specific focus on cities in Low-Middle Income Cities
(LMICs). This open call aims to apply EO data to either 1) advance understanding of city-level climate impacts
and risks, or 2) develop techniques to monitor adaptation and/or mitigation response options to climate change
and/or their linkages on the city scale. Projects shall identify a key research and development challenge relevant
to urban stakeholders to which EO can make a substantial contribution, and submit a journal manuscript before
the IPCC Literature Cut-Off date (October 2026). Projects can apply for funding of €20,000 – €30,000.

Deadline for proposal submission is 28th February 2025.
